Aaron Cote becomes 20th Viking to hit 1,000 career points
Aaron Cote is yet another Wareham High School basketball player to reach 1,000 career points.
Cote, a senior at the high school, hit the milestone only a few high school basketball players reach in the Vikings’ second game of the season against Cardinal Spellman High School Monday, Dec. 15.
“Once I got [1,000] points it was relieving because I could’ve got it the year before but I couldn’t because I injured my ankle,” Cote said.
Cote is a five year member of the varsity team, two time state champion and he attributed much of his success to focusing on consistency in his workouts.
“I’m in my basement all the time just working out and trying to better myself and be prepared for every game,” he said.
Cote said he knew he could hit 1,000 points and was aiming to reach the milestone his sophomore year, but injuries and illnesses sidelined him.
He added he has known many of his current teammates since they were kids which helped him reach the milestone.
“Right now my teammates have a lot of energy so it’s fun to play with them,” he said.
Coming into the game Cote said he didn’t feel any extra nerves until he just missed a three-pointer which would’ve given him 1,000 before making a free throw to hit the mark.
“I just really wanted to win and I was focused on winning the game,” he said.
Moving forward this season, Cote is focused on winning games and hopefully leading the Vikings to a third state championship in four years.
Currently the Vikings have a 6 win and 2 loss record and face-off against Charlestown High School at home Saturday, Jan. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
