Upon re-examining a portion of the Weweantic River in Wareham and Marion that had been conditionally approved to be open to shellfishing, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries closed the area to shellfishing effective April 1.

The closure will extend until at least Nov. 30, according to a March 29 Division of Marine Fisheries notice. 

With the change in status, the taking, selling or possession of shellfish from the defined area is prohibited.

The closed waters are named Middle Weweantic River and listed by the Division of Marine Fisheries as area BB35.5.  Mapped boundaries of shellfish growing areas can be found at mass.gov/info-details/shellfish-classification-areas.
