Projected start in 2025 for Charge Pond Road bridge repair

Apr 9, 2024

Latest plans for the repair of the Charge Pond Road bridge will keep it open throughout construction, which is scheduled to start in the summer of 2025, according to state officials.

The bridge takes Charge Pond Road over Route 25, just past the Gleason Family YMCA.

Construction will occur in two stages, according to Skanska representative Alvaro George. The New York-based construction company Skanska was contracted by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to design the project. During each stage of construction, one lane of traffic will remain open while the other half of the bridge is repaired.

Repair work will start in June 2025 and will last until September 2026, George said.

Work on the Charge Pond Road bridge is part of a “District Five bridge bundle,” which includes bridges from Lakeville, Mansfield, Duxbury and Plymouth that also set for replacement or repair.

A number of “deficiencies” have been detected for the bridges, including the declining condition of bridge decks and substructures, failing paint systems, corroding steel, failing bearings and joints as well as substandard guardrails and approach barrier, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

The estimated total contract cost of this project is $33,968,568.60, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. It is unclear how much the Wareham portion of the project costs.

The Charge Pond Road bridge, which was built in 1967, will have its decks replaced; a cleaning, painting and repairing to the structural steel; repairs to the existing bridge substructures; replacement of bearings and joins; construction of new crash-tested bridge barriers as well as reconstruction of the approach roadway to provide “seamless transitions,” according to the the Department.
