Who is Grumpy?

Oct 8, 2018

The annual Grumpy’s 5k Cranberry Harvest Race will take place on November 3rd, at 9 am at the A.D. Makepeace Company Headquarters in Tihonet Village, 150 Tihonet Road, Wareham. Grumpy’s unique bog walk/run is sponsored by the Cranberry Educational Foundation to honor Robert “Grumpy” Conway, a 46 year employee of A.D. Makepeace Co. and nature lover who passed away in 2010. Grumpy took photos of birds, plants, animals, endangered plants, and everything that one would find around cranberry bogs. He used his photography as a way to teach bog owners, conservation groups, and people in general to take notice of the beauty of our area and the importance to protect the environment. Grumpy’s family, along with the Cranberry Educational Foundation, established the annual Grumpy’s Cranberry Harvest Race with the understanding that the proceeds will benefit the Foundation’s Scholarship Fund.

The mission of the Cranberry Educational Foundation is to introduce the American cranberry, cranberry farming and its heritage to the communities, neighbors and visitors in our area. Our quality educational outreach will enrich understanding and provide strong relationships throughout our community. The Foundation awards scholarships to local students who are either graduating from high schools or are currently in college, and live in towns where cranberries are grown, with preference being given to those whose major in the fields of agriculture or the environment.
