‘Mrs. Lefrancois strong’: students, friends rally to support teacher

Dozens of cars slowly made their way through the rain down Main Avenue on Thursday afternoon, with hazard lights flashing and heartfelt signs and balloons in windows, to show love and support for longtime kindergarten teacher Michele Lefrancois ahead of her treatment for breast cancer.

Lefrancois has been teaching kindergarten in Wareham for nearly thirty years, and many of her current students, former students, and former students with their own children showed up to show her their love, holding signs reading “Mrs. Lefrancois Strong,” “Faith over fear,” and “Cancer chose the wrong girl.”

The police and fire departments also joined in, with lights flashing and sirens blaring.

“I’m a little overwhelmed,” Lefrancois said with tears in her eyes as the final cars drove by. “It was really nice of everybody to come out.”

Her daughters, Brooke  and Rebecca Myers, along with her sister Martha Holmes, organized the parade to show her how loved she is, as she will not be able to bring anyone with her to the hospital due to coronavirus restrictions.

Lefrancois will be undergoing surgery on Friday, which she said could be the only treatment she will need if all goes well.

Lefrancois and her family expressed their gratitude to all those who came out to show their support.
