To the Editor:

Firstly, let me tell you that my dad related this story to me with tears in his eyes.

On a recent afternoon, my 91-year-old dad Peter “Sonny” Fernandes was parked at his usual handicapped space on the Onset Pier. As a boat owner in his younger days, he comes to the pier daily to enjoy the view of the bay, catch up with his buddies, and occasionally take a nap. 

On this particular day, a young man approached his van with a styrofoam container in hand. He addressed him as "sir" and told my dad that he would like to share with him a lunch of a grilled cheese sandwich and fries. Initially, my dad was a little apprehensive and thought this might be some kind of prank. 

But as the boy continued, his skepticism waned. The young man told my dad that his name was Tom, he was 13 years old, and was staying with his grandmother. He explained that he worked, made his own money, and proudly stated that he had bought the lunch with his own money. 

He went on to tell my dad that staying with his grandmother had made him realize how lonely the elderly can be, and that he wanted to do some little thing to make my dad's day brighter.  Tom certainly did just that. My dad was touched by such a thoughtful act of kindness, especially the caring words, coming from a kid this age. God bless you, Tom. Your loving and compassionate spirit is something we need more of in today's world. Thank you.
