Voters register before deadline at Town Hall event

Oct 24, 2020

With the final day of voter registration for the Nov. 3 election underway, the town held a small voter registration event.

From 2 to 4 p.m., Town Clerk Michele Bissonnette spent time at Town Hall, registering eligible voters. The second part of the event will be held tonight from 7 to 8 p.m., and it will be the last chance for Wareham residents to register to vote in-person. The event is in the Town Hall parking lot at 54 Marion Road.

There is a chair with a poster just outside the Town Hall doors that tells people interested in registering to vote what to do: “Please call 508-291-3140 and we will come out to register you.”

Bissonnette said that as of about 3:20 p.m. Saturday, only two people had come to register in-person.

“Mostly everyone’s been doing online registration,” she said. “I’m processing 50 right now.”

Voters can check their registration status on the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website. For anyone who is not yet registered, today is the final day of registration. Bissonnette said people need to have registered by 8 p.m., whether they are registering in-person or online.

Bissonnette also said she thinks there has been a spike in voter registrations this election.

“Every morning I come in and there are about 30 to 80 in the queue,” she said.

Voters can find more information about registering to vote on the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website, and the Town Clerk’s website provides valuable information about deadlines for vote by mail applications and early voting times in Wareham.
