Wareham woman shares a new way to celebrate with ‘yard cards’

May 17, 2020

Across Wareham, people’s yards have been turning into cards celebrating birthdays and graduations.

Eileen Smith Scully said “Scully’s Yard Cards” started when she got a set of single-letter yard signs to spell out “Happy Birthday” for her niece on May 7.

She said she got two extra sets of the letters from a printing company in case others wanted them. After putting the word out, both of them were taken that same day.

Now, Scully teams up with her 17-year-old daughter Samantha, spending a couple hours each night driving around and setting up yard cards.

“We’ve been doing it ever since,” she explained.

So far, Scully said they have done about 20 of the cards, and the mother-daughter duo is now completely booked through the rest of May.

For birthdays, Scully and her daughter set up the yard cards the night before, to surprise the person celebrating in the morning. Scully and her daughter have also started making cards to congratulate 2020 graduates.

Scully said that some families have booked cards in August, as some schools are tentatively planning ceremonies around that time.

She added that she originally planned to make the yard cards just during this time of social distancing, but she might continue her project even when people are allowed to have parties again. “It’s kind of fun,” she said of her new activity.

While the majority of the cards are in Wareham, Scully said “as long as we have the time, we don’t mind doing other towns.”

To request a yard card, message Scully’s Yard Cards on Facebook.

The cards are free, but a donation to cover the cost of gas is requested.
