Yet another record-breaking week for covid cases in town
Between Jan. 6 and Jan. 13, 387 Wareham residents tested positive for covid — that’s more than three times as many cases as the worst week of the first wave in Dec. 2020, when 112 people got sick.
The total number of cases in town since the beginning of the pandemic is 3,889.
According to state data, 63 percent of Wareham residents — 15,124 people — have had at least one dose of a covid-19 vaccine. Fifty-six percent of residents — 13,639 — are fully vaccinated.
On Jan. 12, Wareham Public Schools reported that 40 students tested positive for covid — the highest total so far this year. Of the covid-positive students, 24 went to the Elementary School, seven went to the Middle School, and nine went to the High School. An additional 50 students were quarantined. Fourteen school staff members were positive for covid, and one was in quarantine.
Southcoast Health, the nonprofit that operates Tobey Hospital in Wareham along with Charlton Hospital in Fall River and St. Luke’s in New Bedford, sent out a message on Jan. 5 to its patients, urging them to get vaccinated against covid-19.
“As variants continue to spread, vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones, and the community from severe illness and hospitalization due to COVID,” the hospital system wrote.
Southcoast Health offers the Pfizer vaccine each Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the clinic at 100 Rosebrook Way. For more information about Southcoast’s vaccination clinics, go to https://www.southcoast.org/covid-19-vaccination/.
Those eligible for the vaccine can find appointments at providers around the state using the state’s website vaxfinder.mass.gov. Those who would prefer to make an appointment online can call 211 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and navigate to the vaccine helpline by pressing one when prompted. The call center has workers on staff who speak English and Spanish, and there are translators available to support residents in about 100 additional languages.
