Game 16 Preview: Gatemen return home to play Anglers
WAREHAM - The Wareham Gatemen (9-6) are back at home tonight as they take on the Chatham Anglers (6-5-2) at Spillane Field at 6:30 p.m.
The Gatemen lost yesterday 9-1 to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks as they fell out of first place for the first time all season. Hyannis overtook Wareham for first place and they now hold a one point lead in the standings (19 points to 18).
The Gatemen pitching staff was not sharp as starter Ken Waldichuk was roughed up for six runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings and took the loss. Connor Lunn was the first reliever out of the bullpen and he gave up three runs in 1.2 innings.
The Gatemen offense scored one run despite having 12 hits on the evening. Five different Gatemen starters had multi-hit nights making the one run performance all the more bizarre.
The Anglers enter play today having lost two straight games including last night’s contest versus Falmouth 4-2 in 11 innings. Falmouth catcher Max Hundley struck out in his first four plate appearances before hitting the go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the 11th to down Chatham.
RHP Joey Matulovich (0-0, 0.69 ERA) makes the start for the Gatemen today in his fourth appearance overall. Matulovich has yet to record a win despite allowing only one run in 13 innings pitched. In his last outing, Matulovich went four innings and he struck out five.
RHP Hunter Gaddis (2-0, 0.00 ERA) is the starter today for the Chatham Anglers. Today’s start for Gaddis is his third start of the year and he looks to pick up as many wins in as many tries. In each of his first two starts this year, Gaddis defeated the Brewster Whitecaps both times out pitching four scoreless in each start.
Catcher Gian Martellini returns to the Gatemen roster as Michael Amditis returns home for summer classes. Martellini has just appeared in one game so far for Wareham going 0-2 in a June 16 matchup at Harwich.
