Game 21 Preview: Gatemen look to snap two game skid at Orleans

Jul 3, 2018

COTUIT – The Wareham Gatemen (12-8) look to get back in the win column as they take on the Cotuit Kettleers (9-8-1) tonight at 5:00 p.m. at Lowell Park.

Wareham enters play looking to snap a two game losing streak. The Gatemen lost last night 5-3 to the Bourne Braves after losing 6-5 the night before to the YD Red Sox. Jared DiCesare threw seven innings for Bourne last night while Gatemen starter Connor Lunn lasted four innings and took the loss.

The Gatemen offense got too little going too late as Wareham only had six hits on the entire game. Bryant Packard and Isaac Collins each hit solo homers for the Gatemen in this one.

As for Cotuit, they are coming off a 12 inning 2-2 tie last night. Prior to that game, the Kettleers previously beat Chatham 4-3. Cotuit had excellent pitching last night as Seth Shuman threw five shutout innings.

Tonight’s matchup between Cotuit and Wareham is the second of six matchups between these two teams. In their first meeting, the Gatemen won 4-2 in a game started by Mason Feole. The Gatemen next play the Kettleers on July 12 back here at Lowell Park.

RHP Joey Matulovich (1-0, 0.50 ERA) makes his fifth appearance and fourth start today for the Gatemen. Matulovich has been excellent this season allowing only one earned run in 18 innings this year. Last time out, Matulovich, pitched five innings and picked up his first win of the season versus Chatham.

RHP Griffin McLarty (0-1, 5.68 ERA) looks to pick up his first win tonight in opposition of Matulovich. McLarty has been roughed up this Cape season as he has given up eight runs over 12.2 innings. In his last start, McLarty allowed four runs over 3.2 innings and he gave up seven hits.

With the loss of Bryant Packard to Team USA, the Gatemen and manager Don Sneddon have to mix up the lineup again tonight. For the first time this year, Drew Millas will be playing right field. Normally a catcher, Millas today will be in the outfield and is batting sixth.

In place of Packard, RHP Derek West from the University of Pittsburgh is now on the Gatemen roster. For the Panthers this year, West made nine starts and posted a 3.24 ERA over 50 innings pitched.
