Contact Improvisation, instigated by Steve Paxton in 1972, is a partnering dance form which arises from the communication between bodies in contact through touch. The technique focuses on giving and supporting weight, and coordinating with gravity and momentum, to create spontaneous relational dances. One of the most radical perspectives offered by the form is the conceptualization of touching and being touched as a concurrent exchange. In this duet, performed by Aaron Brandes and Gabrielle Revlock, the dancers explore the myriad quality of touch and the ways it can be used to offer new pathways for human communication.
