12 days before Christmas and in Onset Village…
Warehamites took a holiday stroll to say hi to Santa Clause, look at decorated Christmas trees with an ocean backdrop and visit local store fronts along Onset Avenue during Christmas in the Village.
The event was held Saturday, Dec. 14 by the Onset Bay Association and Executive Director Kat Jones said the event is their take on a holiday stroll down Onset Avenue. A number of shops use their storefront as a place to celebrate the holidays and she added it offers people a chance to get to know their neighbors.
"We had a lot of different activities and it's kind of geared towards families with kids but everyone is welcome," said Jones. "This kind of event brings the kid out in everyone."
Some of the activities included in the stroll were photos with Santa and a vendor market at the Glen Cove Hotel, cookie decorating at the Wareham Free Library Spinney Memorial branch and a variety of games and prizes with plenty of places to grab a cup of hot chocolate along the way.
Kim Rivera of Onset was decorating cookies with her grandkids and said she has been coming to Christmas in the Village for a number of years.
"It's so nice and it makes the whole community come together," said Rivera. "My grandkids and I love the talking Christmas tree, the pier is beautiful and it makes everything feel so warm and cozy."
Michelle Broder was helping visitors make peanut butter pinecone birdfeeders at the Onset Bay Trading Company store front and she said seeing the community come together was why she wanted to get involved.
"We all need community and we all need to stick together, help each other out and have fun together," said Broder.
Jones said bringing the community together, especially once the summer is over is one of her main goals with this event.
"We thrive in the summer but during the offseason there's not a lot going on and we tend to hibernate," said Jones. "This is just another great way to get people out and go into the shops and we're a small village but we have a lot to offer."
