Costumes and candy and contests, oh my!

Oct 31, 2021

Although the weather caused it to be pushed back a day, wind and rain didn’t stop Community Youth Empowerment from celebrating this spooky season in style.

The organization held its second annual trunk or treat event at the Onset VFW on Sunday, Oct. 31. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Wareham residents were invited to don their best costumes and venture from car to car collecting candy.

Jowaun Gamble, the founder of CYE, said he was pleased with how the event came together.

“It’s an amazing turnout,” he said. About half an hour into the event, Gamble estimated that about 70 kids had already made their way down the line of decorated cars to collect candy.

“We’re just hoping that we don’t run out of candy,” he joked.

Gamble said a number of local businesses and organizations had registered to give out candy this year, including groups from Wareham High School, Tabor Academy, the Onset Fire Department and the Wareham Police.

“This is what we live for,” Gamble said. “We love doing stuff to give back to the community and give back to the kids.”

Courtney Cardoza, who is also a part of CYE, said it was awesome to see the strong turnout.

“These kids are so cute,” Cardoza said. “There was a little girl — she was a flamingo. It was the cutest little costume.”

She praised the various groups for going above and beyond with their car decorations. CYE volunteers also commended the efforts of Faded Image, a barber shop in Wareham, which helped collect much of the candy for the event.

The event featured a costume contest later in the afternoon, and a food truck was also on site.
