Ruling with kindness, and for a cause
Their loyal subjects were family members and their crowns were made of sparkling pink foam. Dreams came true for little girls dressed as princesses, who reigned over Best Friends Learning Center during the Fairytale Dream Party on Saturday.
Unbeknownst to the girls, taking on the roles of princesses will benefit the world around them.
All the money raised from the event will go towards Relay For Life, and eventually toward the American Cancer Society.
For Melanie Dias, the event was her first big one for the year. Dias' daughter attends Best Friends, and Dias is the captain of a Relay for Life team called the "Hope Warriors." Having a mom and an aunt who survived cancer, and having lost some friends to cancer, Dias hopes to raise $5,000 for Relay for Life.
With 16 princesses and $25 per child, Dias raised a total of $400 from the event. Though Dias coordinated the event and contributed to it by purchasing all of the accessories and food, she couldn't have done it all without some help.
"You have to network and get people to donate to make it the most effective," said Dias.
Jacqui Grennell of Fairytale Dream Parties donated an hour of her time and dressed up as the Frozen princess Elsa, leading the young girls through activities.
Maria LaPonta, owner of Best Friends Learning Center, donated the space for the party and even brought out the cotton candy machine at the request of one princess.
The girls, not all of whom are students of the center nor from Wareham, made tiaras at the creation station, enjoyed cupcakes and other "sweet treats," and had story time with Elsa followed by a photoshoot.
"I'm happy with the results," said Dias. "I hope to do it again next year."
The next one - "Apps and Wax" - is on Saturday, April 9, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Lindsey's Restaurant. The owner of PartyLite, a candle company based in Plymouth, will be at the restaurant with her whole line of products on display. Appetizers will be served and there will be a cash bar.
On April 23, there will be a Spaghetti Supper at the Bourne Veterans of Foreign Wars. Tickets are $10 per person, and the event includes karaoke and a raffle drawing.
All the proceeds from both events will go toward Relay for Life.
Dias is looking to host a paint night in the near future as well.
