Superintendent recommends creating new administrative position
Wareham Public Schools will lose its director of curriculum and instruction but gain a new assistant superintendent.
Following a recommendation from Superintendent Kimberly Shaver-Hood, the committee voted 4-1 in favor of creating the new position Wednesday night.
Shaver-Hood said current Director of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Andrea Schwamb’s role has expanded in recent years.
By creating the assistant superintendent position, Schwamb’s duties would be better defined, Shaver-Hood said. The title also comes with a pay raise, bumping Schwamb’s salary from $118,000 to $121,000 per year.
Shaver-Hood noted the position of director of curriculum would cease to exist.
“This is not adding another administrator,” said Shaver-Hood.
Shaver-Hood said some of Schwamb’s current duties, such as assessing staff and looking at how technology could be best utilized, would be expanded under the new title.
Committee member Mary Morgan voted against creating the new position, saying it added an unnecessary level of administration.
“I believe she’s doing a good job, but she’s doing what a curriculum director is supposed to do and she has a lot of support for that,” said Morgan.
