Market Basket on its way!

Jul 8, 2011

Bourne – The family-owned Market Basket Store and New Shopping Center has begun to materialize with demolition already beginning on the existing mall.  Other than going back before the Planning Board to tweak the existing plan, Market Basket is ready to move to Bourne.  The overall square footage of the development will decrease from 106,800 sq. ft. to 101,600 sq.ft.  Both the grocery store and shopping center is expected to open before Memorial Day, 2012.

“It’s a huge economic boost in terms of new jobs and tax revenue to Bourne and the region, “said Marie Oliva, President & CEO, of the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce.  People who now travel to the Market Basket in New Bedford will be able to partake of the new grocery store and shopping center in Bourne. Market Basket is to be commended for following through on every aspect of this project.”

In terms of jobs, here are the numbers:  There is a potential of about 800 jobs broken down as follows: 500 full & part time for Market Basket; 20-25 full & part time for the Café; 90-120 full & part time for the Shopping Center; 150-200 construction jobs. The Shopping Center will have 6-7 additional stores; half of the existing tenants are returning.

About 3 years ago, the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber took an active role in supporting the project, including hosting many meetings with local officials and legislators to garner support for the project.  The Selectmen, public safety officials, planning board, and state legislators all worked together to develop a consensus on the project. The Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber is proud that it was able to support and work with Market Basket to make the project become a reality.

The investment in public infrastructure by Market Basket is close to $2 million in highway improvements and public safety work off the exit by the Sagamore Bridge.  The new access road and traffic lights greatly improve the access in and out of the Mall.   Not a penny of taxpayer money was spent on these improvements.
