2020 Coastal Studies for students entering grades 3-8 and Young Naturalist Summer Programs for children ages 5 - 7

Join the Lloyd Center for the Environment for an exciting summer outdoors! Animal collection, habitat investigations, and fishing are just a few of the activities offered through the 2020 Summer Programs.

In its 39th season, the Lloyd Center’s Summer Programs are designed to give motivated students an opportunity to explore different aspects of environmental science.

All sessions include field study, laboratory work, and fun!

Coastal Studies for students entering grades 3-8:

FRESHWATER WETLANDS (grades 3-5) | July 13-17, 9am-3:30pm | Explore the various ponds, marshes and vernal pools of the Lloyd Center’s local watershed in this hands-on course. Students will have fun in the mud while identifying wetland plants and searching for the animals that call these wetlands their home. Start the summer off with an adventure! Members $325 Non-members $375

GREEN MACHINES (grades 4-6) | July 20-24, 9am-3:30pm | Are you passionate about taking care of our planet? Join the Lloyd Center education staff for a week filled with conservation fun! Hunt for nature’s invaders, harness the power of wind and water, and much more! Adventures to various types of habitats, designing your own wind turbine, and composting make this program an unforgettable learning experience for future Environmental Scientists. Go green! MARINE BIOLOGY (grades 5-8) | July 27-31, 9am-3:30pm | Join the Lloyd Center education staff in exploring the lush local estuarine and beach ecosystems! Collect live animals from the ocean while beachcombing. Observe various adaptations coastal organisms use to survive and thrive. First-hand observation of creatures and marine fun make this program a splash! Members $325 Non-members $375

COLD BLOODED CRUSADE (grades 3-5) | August 3-7, 9am-3:30pm | Have a cool summer with cold blooded creatures. Join the Lloyd Center staff while you hunt for herps. Learn how snakes, turtles and frogs stay cool in the summer heat. Get hands-on with our local reptile residents and have an adventure while you search for amphibians. Get ready to explore the wild! Members $325 Non-members $375

FOREST EXPLORERS (grades 3-5) | August 10-14, 9am-3:30pm | What’s in the woods? Join the Lloyd Center in investigating their 82-acres which includes maritime forest. Students will learn what plants make up the forest, search for insects, seek out amphibians, listen for birds and learn which mammals call it home. Get ready for adventure! Members $325 Non-members $375

Young Naturalist Summer Programs for children ages 5 - 7:

The Young Naturalist Program at the Lloyd Center is a way for children ages 5-7 to enjoy a fun-filled summer of exploration, discovery and wonder of the natural world around them. Throughout the summer, children will learn about the amazing creatures and habitats around the Lloyd Center using hands-on games, activities, crafts and trail walks.

Spaces are limited and they fill up fast! Please register ahead of time.

Whether looking in the sea, sky, forests or ponds, children will be sure to have an exciting day experiencing the remarkable things in the world around us. Children may participate in a half-day session or extend their fun into a full-day adventure. Each session of the summer will incorporate new activities and crafts, so feel free to sign up your child for as many programs as you like!

Under the Sea: During each session children will explore this salt water habitat and discover the incredible ways that animals survive underwater.

In the Sky: Get your head in the clouds as you explore the world of winged creatures and discover the remarkable things happening above your heads.

Forest Frenzy: Become a nature detective! Use scavenger hunts and search for clues that animals leave behind while learning about our creepy, crawly, furry, and scaly friends in the forest.

Ponds & Streams: This summer, put on your boots and jump into freshwater habitats to learn all about the animals that call the ponds and streams their homes.

steam Fridays!: Fridays are even more fun with our STEAM Fridays! program. Educators and children will engage in exciting and educational STEAM projects that will get you thinking!

Members’ children and grandchildren under the age of 18 are eligible for discounted Member rates on Summer Programs.

Please note: The Lloyd Center’s Young Naturalist educators will rotate throughout the week. Each day will be a different instructor.
Young Naturalist Summer Programs run Mondays – Fridays from June 29th – August 14th. Each morning and afternoon session will be different. Morning sessions: 9:00 am – noon, Afternoon sessions: 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm, All Day Sessions available 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Price: Each half day session (morning or afternoon): Member: $32 Non-members: $40, Each full day session* Members: $60 Non-members: $75. Register for an entire week of programs (M-F) and receive the discounted price. An entire week of programs (Monday-Friday, morning or afternoon sessions) Members: $150 Non-members: $190. An entire week of programs (Monday – Friday, full-day sessions*) Members: $285 Non-members: $335. *Early Bird Discount: $5 off each full day session and $10 off each full week session if you register before June 12th. Inquire about sibling discounts.

Note: The Lunchtime Session is an exciting transition between programs. Children will have time for lunch and engage in quieter, nature-themed stories and activities before the afternoon session begins. Please provide your child with a brown bag lunch; refrigerator will be available for use.
