Announcing the Tobias S. Monte Music Scholarship

May 21, 2024

The Board of Trustees of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra has established a music scholarship in honor of Tobias S. Monte, the NBSO’s longtime youth orchestra senior conductor. The scholarship will be awarded annually to young musicians to help them pursue their interest in music.

“Toby has brought the joy of music into the lives of thousands of young musicians during his 40+ year career as a teacher, musician, and conductor,” stated NBSO CEO Dave Prentiss, “we were very fortunate to have him as our youth orchestra senior conductor for fourteen of those years, and with his retirement from the program we felt this was a fitting way to express our gratitude for all he has done for our community.”

The NBSO announced the creation of the scholarship at its season finale concert last week. Donations to the scholarship fund can be made online at www.nbsymphony.org or by mail to NBSO, 128 Union St., Suite 204, New Bedford, MA 02740.

The NBSO is a professional orchestra that annually presents a concert series of classical and pops music with internationally acclaimed guest artists, as well as an outstanding chamber music series. In addition, the NBSO’s innovative and nationally recognized educational programs reach more than 8,000 students each year. The NBSO is dedicated to building a community of music in the South Coast.
