The NBSO 2018 Young People's Concerts: The Orchestra as Ecosystem

Mar 20, 2018

This year's Young People's Concerts had to compete against a blizzard, but with some rearranging we were still able to pull off a full day of concerts, and thousands of local students came to the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center to celebrate their year-long study of balance in classical music and ecology. NBSO Education Director Terry Wolkowicz personalized each concert to include video clips from the schools in attendance, and that definitely got a reaction from our young crowds! Those schools that were unable to attend the rescheduled performances will receive a video of the concert. Students are familiar with our trio of musicians from the in-school assemblies earlier in the year, and the three make themselves known during the full orchestra's performance. Music Director Yaniv Dinur had his hands full keeping them from stealing the show while he conducted classical pieces and compositions that our young students arranged to exemplify states of imbalance moving to balance. Buttonwood Park Zoo's Carrie Hawthorne also made an appearance to share how the Zoo's Goeldi's monkeys fit into the program's Symphony Symbiosis theme.  Another fantastic finish to our three-phase Learning in Concert program! Thank you to our generous education sponsors including Demello International Center, First Citizens' Federal Credit Union, Concerts at the Point, Up with School Arts, the Mass Cultural Council, and the following Local Cultural Councils: Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Fall River, Marion, Mattapoisett, New Bedford, Rochester, Somerset and Westport.
