Friends Academy and The Sally Borden Program at Friends Academy will sponsor a presentation, Understanding How the Brain Learns to Read by Dr. Rick Solomon on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 8:30 am at their campus at 1088 Tucker Rd. in North Dartmouth, MA. This is the second presentation in its Speaker Series on cognitive science and its impact on education, and it is free and open to the public.
The ability to read is a complex neurological process, yet it is actually fairly simple to understand. This workshop will explore the biological and neurological underpinnings of how all children learn to read. Dr. Solomon will address how reading can be affected by language-based learning differences and other factors. The workshop will build an understanding of how anxiety plays a part in learning and reading. Dr. Solomon will look at reading over the lifespan, and how virtually every brain can learn to be a functional reader. He will outline the use of psycho-educational evaluations in assessing reading difficulties and examine the instrumentation utilized to make diagnoses and generate intervention strategies. There will be time for questions and answers.
Dr. Solomon is a licensed Clinical Psychologist, a certified School Psychologist in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of Rhode Island. He is the President/Clinical Director of Delta Consultants, a multi-discliplinary practice in Providence, RI, offering diagnostic and intervention/counseling services to children, adolescents, adults, and families.
