‘Summer of Love’ concert series celebrates 15 years

For Kelly Orne, Onset’s “Summer of Love” concerts are all about being outdoors and listening to live music near the water. Orne has been coming to the Lillian Gregerman Bandshell with her daughter since the series began 15 years ago.

“It’s nostalgic for my daughter — she’s been coming since she was young,” said Orne about her daughter Jorja, who is now 16 years-old.

Concertgoers young and old came together to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the concert series with the season's first show on Wednesday, June 28.

Audience members sang their way through Thee Midnight Society’s setlist, which varied from “Shut Up and Dance” by Walk the Moon to “Zombie” by the Cranberries.

Lead vocalist Jess Smart rallied the crowd as everyone joined in to chorus the hits, with some audience members showing off their best moves to dance with the band.

“[The band is] keeping everybody active and interactive,” said Barbie Gaudreau, who came from Fairhaven to listen to music, be with friends and enjoy the community.

Many community members from all over the South Coast filled the stands and field, enjoying the view of Onset Beach and fare from nearby restaurants.

“I have heard [Thee Midnight Society] before, the beat is just awesome,” said Grace McCormack, who came to the bandshell with two canine friends. “Look at the scenery with the ocean in the background!”

Sarah Gustafson, who came to the show from New Bedford, said, “I love the summertime, you get out and see friends and dance.”

“This is it. This is what it’s about,” she said.

The Onset Summer of Love concert series will continue throughout the summer with free live music every Wednesday, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
