113 runners pound the pavement in 14th annual YMCA 5K
No one cheered louder or longer at the Gleason Family YMCA’s 5K in Onset on Saturday than Chris Koziol.
“I’m like one of those inflatable tube guys you see at car dealerships!” said Koziol, the YMCA Southcoast’s wellness director.
He offered encouragement to 113 participants as they ran the home stretch of the YMCA’s 14th Annual Armed Forces Day 5K Road Race.
Starting and ending at the historic Onset pier, the road race is a fundraiser for the YMCA’s scholarship program. The program awards financial aid to families who cannot otherwise afford YMCA membership, classes and camp.
Runners, some who were decked in patriotic gear, said the cool, sunny conditions made for an excellent race.
“I liked it a lot,” said Casey Ducinski of Duxbury. “The village is beautiful and the course was hilly, making it a little bit of a challenge. It’s a great day for a race.”
An avid runner, Ducinski said she saw the race advertised online and decided to make it her 5K for May.
In keeping with the race’s theme, U.S. Navy personnel were stationed near the finish line where they handed out free water and information. New this year, active military and veterans were given a discount on the $25 entry fee.
The first-, second- and third-place overall male winners were Paul Lapre, 21, of Middleboro, Erik Gall, 25, of Buzzards Bay and Tom Gelson, 51, of Marion, respectively.
The first-, second- and third-place overall female winners were Biliana Mihaylova, 26, of Quincy, Anne Preisig, 48, of Falmouth and Courtney Skelly, 28, of Wareham, respectively.
