Ada J. Lukey, 94, teacher and principal

May 24, 2010

Ada J. (Roberti) Lukey, of North Dartmouth, passed away at home on Saturday, May 22, at the age of 94. She was born January 28, 1916 in Sandwich, the daughter of the late Oreste and Ida (Anselone) Roberti. She was the wife of the late, retired Army Major Philip E. Lukey.

Mrs. Lukey grew up on a farm in Sandwich with her sister and four brothers. She graduated from Bridgewater State College in 1938 and spent her professional life as an educator. Most of that career was in Wareham, where for over 25 years she taught at the Intermediate School and served as principal of the Onset Elementary School.

Following retirement, Ada was proud of her service for almost 20 years as a volunteer at Tobey Hospital.

Ada married her beloved soldier Phil in 1941, just before he left for the European Front. Upon his return, they lived throughout the United States, including Puerto Rico, and traveled extensively as he extended his service in the Army, retiring several years before his death in 1981. Ada continued her travels thereafter, taking hot-air-balloon rides over the Serengeti in Tanzania, going on photo safari in Kenya, trekking the rain forests of eastern Australia, and kayaking amidst the glaciers in Alaska. An avid golfer and member of the Little Harbor Country Club and Women's Golf Association, she played until well into her 80s.

Apart from her husband, the great love of her life was their family, and the several hundred students whom she taught and for whom she served as principal in her 45-year career as an educator.

She lived her long life with great joy, and left it in peace. Mrs. Lukey is survived by son Edward J. and his wife Paula, of Sharon, daughter Joan Lukey Stevenson and her husband Philip Stevenson, of Lincoln and Marion, her grandchildren Bethany Faria and her husband Robert, Nathan Lukey and his wife Jennifer, and Heather Stevenson, and a great-grandson Andrew Faria. She is the sister in-law of Olga Roberti, of Sandwich, and Lillian Roberti, of KY, and the sister of the late Edmando Roberti, Irene Beers, Henry Roberti, Albert Roberti and J. Louis Roberti.

Her funeral will be from the Wareham Village Funeral Home, 5 Center St., Wareham on Saturday, May 29, at 10:15 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at Saint Patrick's Church, 82 High St., Wareham.
