Agawam and Mayflower Ridge sewer project gearing up

Jan 12, 2011

At the Board of Selectmen's meeting Tuesday night, Water Pollution Control Facility Director Guy Campinha told Selectmen that sewer contract 3, which would connect the Agawam and Mayflower Ridge neighborhoods to the municipal sewer system, could be ready to go out to bid within the next two months.

Responding to questions about the status of the project from selectman Steve Holmes, Campinha told the Board Tuesday that the last major hurdle to the project involves determining new pump stations for the sewer hook-ups. He later clarified that stations may have to be located on private property, and he still needs to survey homeowners in the area as to their willingness to host said pumping stations.

“People often have NIMBY, 'not in my backyard,' objections to these sorts of things at first, but can usually be persuaded that things like sewers contribute to the greater good," Campinha said.

Contract 3 is the last of 12 sewer expansion projects that the town began in 1998.  Campinha says he hopes to be able to present a plan for the pump stations to Selectmen at their January 25 meeting, and that the project will be ready to bid before the end of February.
