Alice M. Cassidy, 95, registered nurse, newspaper columnist
Alice M. Cassidy (formerly Mrs. Alice Mathews), 95, of West Wareham, formerly of Weston, died April 11 in Wareham after a brief illness.
Born in Concord to a large and devoted family, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Frances McCabe. She had lived in Weston since 1954 before moving to Wareham in 2006.
Alice was a registered nurse at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and later a psychiatric nurse at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. She was a long time volunteer for the Samaritans suicide prevention hotline where she counseled people in crisis. Active in town affairs, she served on the board of the League of Women Voters where she oversaw the revision of Weston, a Twentieth Century Country Town, the know-your-town handbook. She was a contributor and wrote the column Weston Briefs for the Weston Town Crier in the 1960s. She was a member of the First Parish Unitarian Church in Weston and volunteered at the Attic Treasures Room at the church, the proceeds benefiting local charities.
Alice had a special love of poetry, literature, and antiques. An avid book collector, she had a lifelong interest in the writings of 19th century Concord authors including Emerson, Thoreau, and Louisa May Alcott. In later years she owned a small shop dealing in antiques, books, and collectibles. She treasured her family and the time she spent with them.
She leaves three sons, Scott Mathews and his wife Tia of Saunderstown, R.I., William Mathews of Cambridge, and Bruce Mathews of Edgartown; daughter Martha (Mathews) Maynard and her husband William of Wareham, stepdaughter Dianne Foshay of Kansas, granddaughters Jessica Mathews of New Orleans, Kerri Christie of Arizona and Taryn Hardy of Washington, 4 great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Cassidy, former husband John D. Mathews of Cambridge, brothers Richard, Irving, Robert, Thomas, Herbert, and Nelson McCabe and sisters Florence Grimes, Ina Leith and Helen Folsom.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, April 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian Church, 349 Boston Post Road, Weston, followed by interment at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord.
