All aboard in Wareham: Riders enjoy return of Holiday Train

After a two-year hiatus, a holiday train chugged back into (and out of) Wareham several times on Sunday.
Families flocked to Wareham from all over the South Coast for the newest installment of the Wareham Village Association’s Holiday Train. It featured a festive environment inside one of the Cape Cod Central Railroad’s passenger train as it traveled from Wareham to Buzzards Bay for the course of the day from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Wareham Village Association Vice President Tracy McGraw said the group took a break from the tradition after experiencing problems in past years. She said a change in the regime at Cape Cod Central Railroad allowed them to re-explore the potential for this year’s event.
“Sales were down (from past years), but we were able to reestablish a relationship with the new train people,” she said. “We’re making it happen. It is what it is.”
Though numbers were reportedly down, those who were in attendance enjoyed themselves. Riders young and old filled the train’s cars, sang Christmas carols, and enjoyed the views offered over the course of the six-mile, hour-plus-long ride. After the ride, attendees were able to enjoy face painting and refreshments at the Wareham Fire Department's Station 1 on Main Street.
“I’m riding the Christmas train!” exclaimed two-and-a-half-year-old Keegan Howland of Acushnet, who enjoyed the ride with several members of his family.
And as previously mentioned, it wasn’t just the kids who were into the train ride.
“I love trains,” said Lynn Garifales of Fairhaven, who rode the train with her son, Michael and other family members. “It’s been a while since I’ve been on one.”
McGraw said that the renewed relationship with the railway could be considered a success, and that it’s in the plans to add a Halloween train to the mix in 2015.
“The new people running (the train) — they’ve been great,” she added.”
