All fall sports postponed conference-wide

Sep 4, 2020

It’s official: There will be no fall sports at Wareham High School during the fall.

Instead, football, volleyball, soccer, and field hockey will be played during a delayed season from early March through early May.

The decision was made by superintendents and athletic directors at all the schools in the South Coast Athletic Conference: Apponequet, Bourne, Case, Dighton-Rehobeth, Fairhaven, Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Tech, Old Rochester Regional, Seekonk, Somerset Berkley, and Wareham.

The delayed season will be shorter than usual, with only about twelve games, and likely no tournaments.

If a game is rained out, it will just be cancelled.

While the winter season is scheduled to run roughly as normal, starting the Monday after Thanksgiving and ending after February break, the spring season is set to be pushed back to accommodate the rescheduled fall season. Spring sports will run from May 10 to July 10.

School leaders will be meeting in November to determine if the winter season can proceed as scheduled.

Some of the specifics about game play are still up in the air. Deliberate contact between players may need to be eliminated, and distancing will likely need to increase.

Once hybrid classes resume in person in Wareham, there may be practices during which student athletes could run drills or train with no-contact exercises.

Athletic Director Ed Rodrigues said that it was likely that each sport would only meet about two afternoons each week, meaning that interested students might be able to participate in two sports during the same season.
