Amber Filkins awarded Christa Baptiste Patterson Scholarship

Aug 29, 2014

Wareham’s Amber Filkins has gotten herself another scholarship.

Filkins graduated from Wareham High School in May and was one of the best basketball players on the South Coast, and she recieved numerous college scholarships at the end of last school year.

The other recipient of the Christa Baptiste Patterson scholarship was Makayla Cormier of Dartmouth.

Christa Baptiste Patterson was a three year old who was diagnosed with Myelogenous Leukemia in 1995.

Unfortunately, a bone marrow match was not found for Patterson, but the scholarship committee was formed to help raise funds to help defer the cost of bone marrow transplants and to promote bone marrow drives to diverse groups of people.

The committee also offers scholarships to South Coast students in memory of Patterson.

Filkins scored over 1,052 points in her career at Wareham, good enough for sixth-all time on the Wareham High School scoring list. She was a two-time South Coast Conference all-star and owns a school record for career three-pointers with 201.

Filkins also was the first athlete from Wareham to win the Dave Cowens award.  For the past 25 years, the award has been given annually to one male and one female senior basketball player on the South Coast who best demonstrate leadership on and off the court.

Filkins will attend Catholic University of America this fall. She will likely major in Psychology or Sports Therapy and Sports Management as well as play on the school’s Division III basketball team.
