Anna Hall (Smith) Ackerman, 84

Anna Hall (Smith) Ackerman, 84, of East Wareham, passed away May 10 at the New Bedford Rehabilitation Hospital after a brief illness.

Anna was born in East Wareham on August 19, 1926, the daughter of the late Howard M. and Frances (Feeley) Smith Sr.

A lifelong resident of Wareham, Anna graduated from Wareham High School and Bates College majoring in English and minoring in education. Ms. Ackerman is a former member of the Wareham School Committee, serving several terms and advocating strongly for children with disabilities.

A lover of classic British and American literature, she enjoyed reciting by heart her favorite passages from her favorite Masters of Wit and Humor. She was particularly fond of the humor of James Thurber and S.J. Perelman of the New Yorker Magazine.

Anna is survived by her children; Mary Jane Ackerman of East Wareham and John H. Ackerman and his wife Denise of Fall River. She is also survived by many loving and cherished nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She is the former wife of the late John Henry Ackerman and sister of the late Howard M. Smith Jr. and his wife Betty Smith.

Visiting hours were held May 12 at the Wareham Village Funeral Home. Burial in Agawam Cemetery was private.
