Annual American Legion flea market returns

Aug 14, 2021

After canceling the annual market last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Wareham American Legion Post 220 hosted its 42nd annual flea market on Saturday, Aug. 14.

Despite the heat and the threat of rain in the forecast, vendors and shoppers alike turned out for the sale.

Eleanor Leonard, who had a table at the market, said there had been decent turnout, but thought that some people were scared off by the weather. This year was her first time at the flea market, she said.

“It started out well,” she said. “People come, they look and then they walk away. But then they come back.”

She said the best approach was to “do a little bargaining.”

Russell and Susan Foley were also at the market, selling a variety of items, including some painted shells and rocks.

“The shells were gathered at Horse Neck Beach, and [Russell] painted them,” Susan said. “And the rocks came from Reno, Nevada.”

Russell said painting has been one of his hobbies since he retired.

The pair said it was their second time at the American Legion’s flea market. They participated in 2019, before the pandemic, Russell said.

“There was probably over 100 people here, at least,” Russell said.

Tomorrow, on Aug. 15, the Foleys said they’ll be continuing to sell some of their items at their house on Swifts Neck Beach.

The flea market was scheduled to last until around 3 p.m., but due to the storms set to roll in Saturday afternoon, some vendors began packing up a bit early.
