Anonymous tip leads to break in robbery case one year later
With help from an anonymous tipster, Wareham Police arrested and charged a 40-year-old Dartmouth woman with armed robbery on Thursday, Dec. 13, for her alleged involvement in a 2011 incident at Pepin's Liquors in West Wareham.
Surveillance video from Nov. 28, 2011 showed Windy Monteiro, of 671 State Road, Dartmouth, entering Pepin's Liquors, having a conversation with an employee, and returning to her vehicle in the parking lot, according to police.
Police say a man, who was a passenger in the vehicle, then entered the store, jumped over the counter, threatened the employee with a knife, and then left with a cash register.
Monteiro then allegedly picked up the man a short distance from the store, police said.
On Nov. 29, 2012 – almost a year to the day after the robbery – Wareham Police received the tip about Monteiro.
A detective from Wareham then met with two New Bedford detectives on Dec. 4, who, earlier that day, had served Windy Monteiro with a subpoena. The New Bedford detectives viewed the photo taken by the surveillance cameras at Pepin’s, and identified the female in the video as Windy Monteiro.
After running a check of the Registry of Motor Vehicles database, police found that Monteiro's husband has the same kind of car that was used in the robbery registered in his name.
The New Bedford detectives indicated that they are investigating Windy Monteiro, her husband, Paul Monteiro, and “several associates with their involvement in several armed robberies within New Bedford and the surrounding communities,” according to court documents.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident, and the identity of the man involved.
In addition to New Bedford Police, the Wareham Police Department was assisted by Dartmouth Police and the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section.
