Anti-violence organization holds 6th annual golf tournament fundraiser

Despite the sunny day, fewer golfers attended the sixth annual Scotty Monteiro Jr. Foundation Golf Tournament than co-organizer and foundation treasurer Wendy Monteiro had hoped.

“It was 96 [golfers], which was a little disappointing, because we’ve sold out where we’ve had 144 golfers,” Monteiro said. “Hopefully, next year, we’ll be back up to the 144 range.”

The Scotty Monteiro Jr. Foundation is an anti-violence organization based in Wareham. Monteiro and other members of her family began the organization, after her nephew and godson, Scotty, was killed trying to defend a friend against a robbery at a party six years ago.

“We found how many people … his death really affected,” Monteiro said. “We knew he was popular, we knew he was a good kid, but we were surprised that people from the age of 70 to little kids -- he had an effect on their lives.”

The golf tournament, which took place at the Bay Pointe Club Saturday afternoon, also included dinner, a night of dancing, a silent auction and a raffle for various door prizes. There was also a helicopter ball drop, in which numbered golf balls were dropped from a helicopter near a course hole. The ball closest to the hole won $2,000, while the furthest won $500.

The tournament is the organization’s biggest event of the year, and funds the organization’s anti-violence efforts. The foundation has sponsored local anti-violence education events at schools, such as bringing in anti-drug advocate Chris Herren to speak, and Rachel’s Challenge, an anti-bullying program.

Monteiro said she believes a lot violence is preventable, and that this is possible through education. She hopes the organization eventually spreads beyond Wareham and becomes a recognizable symbol against preventable violence.

“We want people to see this, and when they see the ‘SM’ to think of stop the violence,” Monteiro said. “The more people we see wearing these T-shirts … that’s another way of putting stop the violence awareness out there.”

Monteiro said the winning team was composed of Anthony Monteiro, Chippy DiMiranda, Geoff Cardoza, and Alan Monteiro, all of whom won $500. Raschel Pratt won the helicopter ball drop.
