Archbishop Williams ends Wareham girls' season 70-43
The #1 seeded Wareham girls basketball team was handed a stunning and solidly convincing defeat in its South Division 3 quarterfinal game against Archbishop Williams of Braintree on March 5.
Archbishop Williams attacked Wareham from the opening tipoff, harassing every Viking ball-handler and leaving little space for Wareham shooters to get clean looks at the basket. The visitors from Braintree used their size to limit Wareham to only one shot, usually a hurried one, before rebounding and racing off to their own offensive end.
The Archies opened up a 7-0 lead and never looked back. The closest Wareham would come the rest of the game was four points. The team's lead was 23-7 at the end of the first quarter and 31-24 at halftime, when the Vikings were able to temporarily regroup and outscore Williams 10-3 to close out the half.
But whatever momentum Wareham had coming out of the halftime break quickly evaporated under a 13-5 barrage by the Archies. Wareham put one more surge together and cut the lead to nine (44-35), but Williams responded with a 14-0 run that effectively ended the Wareham season.
Senior Ally Watkins and junior Lexie Silvia led the Vikings with 13 points apiece. Archbishop Williams sophomore guard Sara Ryan led the Archies with 18 points.
The #8 seeded Archies will face Cardinal Spellman, who defeated Fairhaven 54-33 earlier in the day, in a semifinal game March 12.
