Artist creates 'fan birds' on Main Street
Interlock and hinge: that's what makes Russian fan birds work, said Skip Waite.
The fanned design of the wooden, hand-carved birds depend on the feathers that interlock and are able to hinge off a single piece of wood. And that's all it's made of: a single piece of cedar wood.
"Who would believe that that's one piece of wood?" said Waite. "They'd think it's impossible. But it's possible."
Waite has been creating Russian fan birds, also known as "Birds of Happiness," for years now.
For the past two years, he's had a space to create his birds in the Old Company Store. The store closed recently, and Waite is looking for a place to do his work.
On Friday, he was outside of Twigs and Tides on Main Street. He was one of three artists featured at the store during Main Street Madness, an event lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Main Street Madness celebrated businesses on Main Street, many of which had specials, sales, raffles, or giveaways for the day. Twigs and Tides, for example, had a 20 percent sale storewide.
