Ask questions about nitrogen regulations

Oct 11, 2011

To the Editor:

The Wareham Board of Health is looking to pass new regulations for nitrogen output that will create more stringent regulations than the Massachusetts State Sanitary Code (Title 5).

Property owners will be required to install costly alternative septic systems. The cost to upgrade your septic will now be in the range of $40,000 and testing and maintenance will be $2,000 per year.

The Board of Health will hold a public hearing on the new regulations on Wednesday, October 19 at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall auditorium.

You need to be heard. You deserve an answer to the following questions:

  • Where are the studies that require such an aggressive goal?
  • Why has no other town in Massachusetts adopted such an unreasonable regulation?
  • Are there any other less-expensive solutions to achieve a similar or better goal?
