Authentic Portuguese food now in Wareham

Lou DeMello had always wondered why there were no authentic Portuguese restaurants in Wareham, so decided to open one of his own.

The Sabroza Grill, located inside of Stevie B's restaurant in Onset, officially opened on Thursday and DeMello is poised to see business take off.

"People were telling me to open up a Portuguese restaurant here because they were tired of going to Fall River or New Bedford," DeMello said.

He said his children all participated in Wareham sports and he would always donate food for games and fundraisers. At a recent game DeMello said he was sitting next to two men talking to each other about how much they enjoyed the Portuguese food.

"A light went off in my head," said DeMello. "Maybe this is telling me something."

The Sabroza Grill runs a takeout and delivery service and uses the kitchen space in Stevie B's at 270 Onset Ave. DeMello said Steve Beranger, the owner, is a family friend and offered the use of his kitchen.

Another family friend is Emmanuel Medeiros, the head chef at Sabroza. Medeiros worked for 27 years at a restaurant in Fall River. Some of the Sabroza specialties include Portuguese dishes such as Cacoila, Steak Sabroza Style, Shrimp and Chicken Mozambique and Pork Alentejana.

DeMello said he uses top of the line meats for his food. As the captain of a scallop boat out of New Bedford, he knows where to get the freshest seafood as well.

"It's a tough time to open up a business but I think the delivery is going to take off," he said. Sabroza has already delivered food to Town Hall and Tobey Hospital where, DeMello said, they want Sabroza to do some catering for them.

"I'm almost 100 percent positive it's going to take right off because of the great food."
