Bandshell beautification association now officially a nonprofit

The Gregerman Band Shell Upgrade Association announced it will officially go by a new name and a new status, as of Tuesday night’s Selectmen meeting.

Paul Ciccotelli, Secretary of the Onset Bay Association, told the Board the group’s new name will be Cultural Connection, Inc., but its function – raising money to fix up and maintain the Bandshell – will remain the same.

The group is a part of the Onset Bay Association, and is run by four people. Ciccotelli, one of the four, said the group was formerly an unincorporated nonprofit organization, which means it had not formally applied to the state for nonprofit status. However, because it is now an incorporated nonprofit, it must change the way it directs money to the town.

“The problem is, you can’t just hand the town money,” Ciccotelli said in an earlier interview. “A government-created instrumentality cannot be a charity. There have to be organized channels for it to go through.”

Ciccotelli told the Board he would present a memorandum of understanding, which he described as an informal contract that would allow the Board and the group to hammer out the details of moving money the group raises to the town.

“We need to get together and talk about what the channels will be,” Ciccotelli said.

So far, Ciccotelli said, the group has raised $2,800 from the events held at the Bandshell. He said they hope to raise more soon, because “we have it down now.”

“We are hoping to have four more free movies this fall, but we haven’t gotten that together yet,” Ciccotelli said. “The first order of business is how many people we want on the board. We don’t have a desire to have a small board.”

Selectwoman Judy Whiteside said she thought “the idea was a wonderful idea” and would put it on the agenda for the Board’s meeting on Sept. 29.
