Beach clean-up event wet, but successful
Though wet weather dampened the first ever Keep Wareham Beautiful Coastal Clean-up Day, dedicated volunteers and town officials filled eight truckloads with trash from the beaches and shorelines.
"I'm pleased with the turnout, with the weather we had to go against," said Harbormaster Garry Buckminster, who coordinated the effort.
Roughly 10 locations across Wareham were included in the clean-up, with the major focuses being Onset Beach, Little Harbor, and Swifts Beach.
"This is something we should be doing every day," said Selectman and Onset resident Ellen Begley as she picked up trash on Onset Beach.
Health Agent Robert Eithier, EMS Director David Evans, the Parkwood Beach Association, and many residents also helped in the effort.
Volunteers sorted trash to separate recyclables, which went straight to the Wareham Recycling Center.
Buckminster said he plans to make the clean-up an annual event.
"Our coastline is too important," Buckminster said. "We have to keep it clean."
