Big birthdays for towns coming this summer
Imagine going from Wareham to Sandwich without crossing a bridge. On July 29, the Cape Cod Canal turns 100-years-old.
Many events including a visit from the Charles W Morgan Tall Ship, a tug boat parade, boat parade of lights, spectacular fireworks, music festivals and more are planned.
The “Blending of the Waters” Gala on April 26 at Mass Maritime Academy simulates when the waters of Cape Cod Bay and Buzzards Bay were mixed as the canal was completed.
“This celebration is going to be great fun,” said Rear Admiral Richard Gurnon, President of the Cape Cod Canal Centennial Celebration Committee. “Much of the history in the area that relates to the canal is being celebrated. The Centennial Committee is made up of members from the area historic societies, Army Corps of Engineers, the Sandwich 375th and Wareham 275th committees, Cape Cod Canal Chamber, Destination Plymouth County and Cape Cod Chamber as well as so many others. All of the surrounding communities are adding their own unique pieces to the Canal’s 100 birthday to make this an event that will be memorable.”
