Bike lane coming to Onset
Bicycle riders will soon have their own lane through Onset Village.
Members of the Wareham Bike Path Committee asked the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday to grant approval to the Municipal Maintenance Department to paint a bike lane through Onset.
The work would be completed with state Chapter 90 funding, which allows municipalities to be reimbursed for public works expenditures under certain circumstances.
"We're not asking to build a path here, we're looking to stripe an existing road," Bike Path Committee Chair Michael Langford explained.
The Bike Path Committee has been working for eight years to establish a bike path in Wareham that would connect to proposed or existing paths in neighboring towns.
This would be a step in the right direction, Langford told the Selectmen.
"Anything we put on the ground is a big victory," he said.
Selectman Patrick Tropeano asked for a specific dollar amount as to what the project would cost, and while he was assured it wouldn't be much, he wasn't satisfied with that answer.
"I think, in the future, we need to know what everything costs," said Tropeano.
Still, the Selectmen unanimously approved the measure.
The lane will start at Depot Street at Onset Avenue, then wind down West Boulevard, going past Shell Point, down South Boulevard, before reconnecting with Onset Avenue again. The route purposely eschews the busier center of Onset for safety reasons.
