Bizarre accident causes stir on Main Street
A rogue SUV caused a stir on Main Street just after 6 p.m. on Tuesday after the driver backed into a light pole between Eastern Bank and Pezzoli Square, became stuck on a decorative island, and, after getting a push, fled the scene.
The handful of witnesses to the incident appeared puzzled, and spoke to Wareham Police officers who arrived to find the light shattered and the pole in pieces.
Rob Pierce had a front-row seat to the bizarre scene.
"Some kid got into the driver's seat, backed up, floored it, hit the light pole that was in the next parking lot, and got stuck," explained Pierce, who, donning a Statue of Liberty costume, was working outside of Liberty Tax across the street from the scene. "Then they somehow pushed him out and they took off."
Of course, before taking off, they had to remove the broken light fixture from the ground behind the car.
Police caught up with the driver and, according to emergency reports, summonsed the person for leaving the scene of an accident that caused property damage.
