Black Friday ushers in holiday season
When Robby DiGiantomaso, 18, left his house on the evening of Black Friday, it wasn’t for marked-down TVs videogame consoles. It was for a quart of coffee-flavored Hagen Daaz.
At just past midnight on Friday, Nov. 27, DiGiantomaso and a friend decided to brave the mobs of people at target in the Wareham Crossing to sate their sweet tooths and catch a glimpse of the Black Friday madness.
Target was teeming with holiday shoppers looking for one-day only sales at midnight even after an early opening at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, DiGiantomaso said. Among the typically popular items flying off the shelves like electronics and video games were enormous plush bears going at $10. As far as the eye could see, everyone in the store was toting “one or two or three” bears, he added.
“People were walking out with two TVs, an Xbox, a GoPro—and a bear,” DiGiantomaso said. "I was gonna buy a giant bear but they were sold out.”
The pair had no qualms with skipping the lines to hit the cash registers, carrying their lone tub of ice cream.
“They had lines [everywhere] and me and Marc said ‘Nope’ and went the other way,” DiGiantomaso said.
Twelve hours later, the Crossing was still packed though most of the more laidback shoppers were getting their turn. However, Amy Bruce and her daughter Molly felt they’d have better luck braving Wareham shopping than Hyannis
“We don’t come out too early,” said Amy. “…It was either here or Hyannis.”
The two were enjoying a tour of the crossing from Old Navy to DSW with much less of the morning madness.
The Mac Express was one of many stores to open their doors early. Brandon Stevens spent his first Black Friday with the store in awe of how many people came out to take advantage of the sales. With sales on iPads, Macs, and other Apple merchandise, items were flying off the shelves.
“The crossing was packed all morning. In general, it’s the most people I’ve seen in the crossing at that time,” Stevens said. “At 8 a.m., there are usually two, three cars [but] the whole crossing was packed by 8.”
