Board of Health and Medical Reserve Corps band together to teach Warehamites life-saving techniques

Feb 19, 2016

The Board of Health is looking for volunteers to learn life-saving techniques.

Registered nurse and Medical Reserve Corps coordinator Lisa Jackson spoke with the Board of Health about the initiative at the board's regular meeting Wednesday evening. She suggested that for 15 or 20 minutes at the end or beginning of every Board of Health meeting, there could be First Aid and CPR demonstrations for any who want to take part in it.

The hope is to get the community involved in family preparedness during emergency situations. This includes sheltering tabletop workshops where community members will run through drills setting up sheltering stations in case of emergencies, such as infectious disease outbreaks or natural disasters.

Jackson and the members of the board will conduct a survey on March 16 to see who's available, and how much interest there is in the program. After that, Jackson will come in every two months to begin the learning process.

Between those two initial steps, Jackson hopes to recruit enough volunteers who will lead meetings on their own.

“It's a nice way for the community to understand where the resources are, and the information, to take of your family and pets,” Jackson commented.

The board has not yet decided what the minimum age requirement will be, but has considered setting it to the age of 18. It is also unclear if there will be a fee associated with the program.
