Bourne sweeps Wareham Gatemen from playoffs
It was a different season, but the same outcome for the Wareham Gatemen as the team was swept out of the playoffs for the second consecutive year by the Bourne Braves.
The second game of the three game series took place Saturday at Doran Park at Upper Cape Cod Technical Regional High School. There, the Gatmen (No. 2 seed) lost 8-7 on a walk-off hit by John Jones down the left field line.
Launching an impressive offensive effort, the Braves (No. 3 seed) overcame a five-run deficit as the team entered the bottom of the ninth with the score 7-2.
Fittingly, Jones started the late inning heroics with a single off Gatmen pitcher Christian Taugner. Grant Williams followed Jones’ lead and singled immediately after, setting the stage for Andrew Shaps, who hit a home run.
Now 7-5 with no outs, Gatemen pitcher Jake Matthys was called to the mound, but was unable to stop the Braves’ momentum.
“Give [the Braves] credit, they got nine hits in the ninth inning and not too many of them were cheapies,” said Coach Jerry Weinstein. “They came up ready to hit.”
Despite the pitching change, Willy Yahn stepped up and hit a double, then stole third on a passed ball.
A pop fly was caught, giving the Gatemen their first out and some hope, but then the Braves singled twice in a row, loading the bases.
Gateman Nick Margevicius relieved Matthys and struck out Jake Mangum for the second out, but was unable to throw past Jones.
While the loss was heartbreaking for the team, General Manager Andrew Lang said the organization’s overall goal – improving players – was met and the summer was an excellent one for the team. This year marked the team earning its best regular season record (25-10-4) since 2001.
“They did everything we asked them to do,” said Weinstein. “It was a great summer for everybody.”
