Boy with alleged gun causes brief Upper Cape Tech lock down
Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School was on lock down briefly this morning but there are no reported injuries after a teenage male was found with an alleged gun in his possession, according to the Bourne Police Department and Upper Cape Assistant Superintendent Robert Dutch.
At around 11:30 a.m. the police apprehended a 16 year old suspect in regards to the incident, police said.
The lock down entailed the locking of inside and outside doors at the Upper Cape High School and the prevention of students and faulty from going into hallways, Dutch explained.
"I think it was minimal disruption, everyone knew what to do because we practiced it before," said Dutch. "There were no issues."
A Bourne school bus driver prepared to start her bus route in the Coady School parking lot at around 6:00 a.m. when a male jumped out of a bus, police said.
The bus driver approached the subject who then reached into a black backpack and allegedly pulled out what she described as a short rifle type gun, police said.
The driver described the suspect as a white male with black hair in his mid to late teens and wearing black baggie pants and a long hooded sweatshirt, according to a police statement.
The driver then ran towards the direction of Sandwich Road and called the Bourne Police Department at 6:15 a.m., police said, who then responded to the call along with area police departments.
Upper Cape High School closed from approximately 8 to 9 a.m. after being directed to do so from the Police Department, said Assistant Superintendent Dutch.
The Bourne Public Schools also went into a modified "safe mode" based on the recommendation of the Bourne Police, said Bourne School Superintendent Steven Lamarche in a prepared statement.
The safe mode required all student and adult arrivals be accounted for, Lamarche said in the statement.
All schools opened safely and are proceeding with a normal school day, said Lamarche.
