Boys and Girls Club’s tennis program wraps up second season
The Wareham Boys and Girls Club’s free tennis program wrapped up its second season on Wednesday, August 17 with a tournament for the players.
Children ages 9 through 13 participated in the program.
Tre Decanto in the 9-10 age group and Dyondre Dominguez in the 11-13 age group were the winners of Wednesday’s tournament. Both were awarded a new Prince tennis racquet donated by New Jersey-based Prince Sports, Inc.
Tennis instructor Joanne Byron said she is pleased with the progress all the children made on the court during the season. Byron said the children have been enthusiastic and highly-motivated throughout the program.
"They have had a great time learning and playing the game," she said.
In addition to game basics, Byron said the children developed good sportsmanship and tennis etiquette.
The tennis staff was made up of "Tennis All Stars," members from the Sippican Tennis Club and tennis players from Wareham and Rochester.
The volunteers included: Jim Roberts from Wayside Racquet and Swim Club in Marlborough, Dr. Milton Weiner, Olivia and Abby Offringa, Connie Heacox, Steve Ford, and Doug Geist.
Gail Offringa and Susan Sattelmair - who have been teaching with Byron for at least ten years - also volunteered, along with Sharon Titcomb, Dede Smith and Sue Wood from Sippican Tennis Club.
