Boys & Girls Club, Gleason YMCA host job preparedness workshop

Mar 13, 2012

The Boys & Girls Club of Wareham and the Gleason Family YMCA will host the YO! Youth Onboard for Success job readiness workshop for teens on Saturday, March 17, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The organizations aim to encourage teens to start the summer job search and will help prepare them for the search process.

The event is free of charge. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. The first 30 teens to register will receive a sling backpack.

Speaker Trenetta Newman will motivate students with a story about her high school experiences both at her Compton, California high school and the year she studied in Turkey.

Workshops include: Your Application, Dressing for Success, Decision Making, Employer Expectations, Work Ethic, and more.

Pam Burns from the Plymouth County Teachers Federal Credit Union was one of 18 community leaders who volunteered at last year's event.

Burns met individually with a teen during the last hour of the event to help the individual identify their strengths and weaknesses and provided advice on how to properly complete a job application.

"It was personally rewarding to have the opportunity to share my life experience with a teen from the community and help prepare them for future employment," said Burns.

Barbara Sullivan of the Boys & Girls Club said community support is needed to make the event a success.

"Young people need and want to work. This workshop is an opportunity to give our youth a healthy start to their job search," said Sullivan. "It is also a wonderful opportunity for adults to demonstrate their support for youth who are trying to do the right thing."

Volunteers and financial support for food are needed for the event. Checks to support YO! may be made out to the Boys & Girls Club of Wareham, P.O. Box 587, Wareham MA 02571. Please write "YO!" in the memo line.
