'Bunkettes' come together to host third annual Christmas dinner

Dec 19, 2016

This year's Christmas dinner for veterans, and people in need will be the best one yet, said organizers of the event who call themselves the "Bunkettes."

The ladies meet in the basement of the Onset Veterans of Foreign Wars bunker to discuss the dinner, which they have been planning for weeks.

Held on Friday Dec. 23, the Bunker will host seniors, veterans and people in need for the annual Christmas dinner from 2 to 6 p.m. There will be food, music, canned goods given away, and a clothing rack.

The bunker is still accepting donations, which can be dropped off at the Onset Veterans of Foreign Wars, located at 5 Gibbs Ball Park Road, between Wednesday and Friday, from 1 to 10 p.m.

The Bunkettes include Roberta Cooper, Michelle Dunfee, Mary Healey, Ruthy Souza, Kathy Silva, Lynn Spinola, Henrietta Semedo and Myrna Amado.

"I picked all these cherubs here because they love to give back to the community," said Deneen Rose, organizer of the group.

For those unable to find transportation to the dinner, the Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority will provide rides. The dinner is made possible by donations from several places: Bridgewater State University donated the food, district court employees donated desserts and cash donations came from other places.

"It's really grown. The first year we did it, we ended up giving food to the motel residents," said Spinola. "Last year a lot of people showed up."
