Businesses' holiday drive competition to end with last hurrah at Staples
Asked if his shop was the winner in the friendly competition that had local businesses working to drum up the most donations for families in need this holiday season, Sinners & Saints Tattoo owner Roger Chouinard simply responded: "Are you kidding me?"
With a donation bin packed to the brim and food and toys covering part of the floor at Sinners & Saints, Chouinard thanked the Wareham community for its help in collecting more than $500 worth of food, toys, and gift cards.
Spearheaded by Chouinard, the second annual competition had Sinners & Saints, Old Iron Gym, and Total Auto Concepts competing against TarraDean Studio for the most donations.
The guys were collecting food and toys for John W. Decas Elementary and Meals on Wheels, while TarraDean Studio collected toiletries for Turning Point. (Chouinard thanked Jennifer Rinta for helping to organize the Decas School aspect of the drive.)
Helping in Chouinard's collection efforts were dozens of donors giving in memory of Marc Schluter, who died in 1992 after rolling his Jeep on Red Brook Road. He was just 16 years old.
Chouinard encouraged a grassroots "pay it forward" effort, organized by the Schluter family on Facebook for the 20-year anniversary of the teen's death, to donate to his drive in Marc's name. He offered to double whatever was donated. The community responded in a big way.
"I had to double almost $500 worth of donations," said Chouinard.
Of course, at the end of the competition, the real winners were the families helped by the eager business-owners.
"For the amount of people who come in and out of here," Chouinard said, "I was proud."
But there is one last hurrah, during which representatives from each business will be collecting donations.
This Saturday, Dec. 22, Chouinard will park his pick-up truck and trailer outside of Staples in Wareham Crossing from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for "Stuff the Work Truck."
Toys, nonperishable food, personal care products such as toothpaste and shampoo, and gift cards will be collected. Santa will be on-hand.
Chouinard will offer $10 Sinners & Saints coupons to donors, and will be selling Sinners & Saints merchandise, with proceeds benefitting the cause.
The drive will take place rain, snow, or shine, Chouinard said.
"Stop by and say 'hi,'" he added, "and bring Roger a hot cocoa!"
